PDC: Ergonomic Job Analysis: Selected Tools from the AIHA Ergo Toolkit

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, the participant will learn:

• Why (and how) we use job analysis tools

• A proposed two-tiered methodology for selecting tools

• The information in the toolkit

• How to use:

  • Quick Ergonomics Check

  • PLIBEL

  • ACGIH TLV for Hand Activity

  • ACGIH Back Screening Tool

  • WorkSafe BC calculator for lifts and push/pulls

  • The Strain Index

  • Assessment Tool for Repetitive Activity

Course Description: This 8-hour course will introduce the participants to the AIHA Ergonomic Toolkit. It will explain a two-tiered approach to selecting appropriate tools in different situations. Then the instructor will explain eight of the more than 20 tools currently in the Toolkit. The class will work through example problems using the different tools. Then the class will be given some jobs to analyze and they must select and then use the appropriate tool for the situation. If participants wish to bring video clips of jobs in their facilities to use in this final exercise, they are welcome to do so. Please bring the video on a flash drive.

Approach/Methods: The course will be lecture and discussion with example problems worked as a group.

Bio:
Sheree Gibson, P.E., CPE is President and Senior Ergonomist at Ergonomics Applications, an industrial ergonomics consulting firm. For the past 25 years she has provided job analysis, equipment/methods redesign, and ergonomics training to clients across many industrial sectors in the U.S. and Canada. She is an active member of HFES, AIHA, ASSE and ASME. She currently serves as Vice-President of the Foundation for Professional Ergonomics.
